Renovations of fistula center

IMG-20240122-WA0000

The Beauty of Afrikan Sisterhood has partnered with the Mercer Catholic Women’s Center Fistula Unit in Manneskim, Ghana. It is the largest center in Sub-Saharan Africa.This facility stands as a symbol of hope for women suffering from obstetric fistula, a painful and often isolating condition.

The center is supported by a dedicated outreach team made up of volunteers, former fistula patients, and nurses.  This team travels to remote villages and communities to seeking out women who may be suffering in silence. Their mission is not only to provide medical care but also to break the isolation that many of these women face, offering them both the physical care they need and the emotional support that restores their sense of dignity and hope. Through their compassionate efforts, the outreach team brings healing and connection to women who might otherwise remain invisible and unheard.

Since opening its door in 2009, the Fistula Unit has successfully treated and repaired over 600 cases, all at no cost to the patients. The success rate of these surgeries is an inspiring 80%, a testament to the dedicated staff.

The cost of a single fistula repair, which totals GHC 4005.00 (approximately $700), covers all aspects of the patient’s care, including:

  • Transportation to and from the treatment center, ensuring that distance is never a barrier to healing

  • Preoperative assessments, such as liver and renal function tests, HIV and hepatitis B screenings, and urine tests, to ensure the patient is in optimal condition for surgery

  • Treatment of any chronic conditions that could complicate the surgery or recovery process

  • The surgical procedure itself, where skilled surgeons work to repair the fistula and restore the patient’s health

  • Postoperative care, including rehabilitation and support as the patient heals and begins to rebuild her life

  • Support to start a small trade, helping the patient reintegrate into her community with dignity and the means to support herself

These services, offered entirely free of charge, help to restore not just physical health, but also the hope and confidence of women who may have felt abandoned or forgotten. The Mercer Catholic Women’s Center Fistula Unit is a place of healing, both physically and emotionally, where women can find care, compassion, and a future full of possibilities.

The Beauty of Afrikan Sisterhood made recent renovations and repairs to the Fistula Unit.
